United Nations Upholds Solidarity in Libya: A Beacon of Hope Amidst Flood Devastation
The palpable grief and destruction in northeastern Libya post the dreadful floods is a sight that underlines the urgency of collective humanitarian action. Two weeks since the devastating event, the United Nations and its partner organizations are steadfast, staying true to their commitment to aiding those affected in regions like Derna, Benghazi, Al Bayda, Shahat, and Soussa.
In the face of such overwhelming tragedy, where thousands lost their lives and many are still missing, the dedicated teams from the UN and partner organizations have been a beacon of hope, providing critical humanitarian assistance and addressing the immediate needs of the people.
Resolute Humanitarian Efforts
United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Libya, Ms. Georgette Gagnon, emphasized the vital work being undertaken by the UN and partners. “Humanitarian agencies are on the front lines, extending support to families grappling with their losses, aiding them in meeting their basic needs,” she remarked after her second visit to Derna since the calamity struck.
Meeting Critical Needs
With 4,255 confirmed deaths and 8,540 people still missing, the humanitarian needs remain critical. The UN agencies have sprung into action, working diligently to provide affected people with essentials like safe drinking water, medical supplies, hygiene kits, food items, and psychosocial first-aid services. They have also been instrumental in establishing six field hospitals to address the health crisis and helping rehabilitate the 50% of health facilities that are non-functional in the region.
Accelerating Recovery and Reconstruction
Ms. Gagnon has been pivotal in leading conversations with local authorities and international workers to stress the importance of full access by humanitarian workers and strong coordination amongst all relevant stakeholders. She highlighted the urgent need to expedite early recovery efforts to pave the way for long-term reconstruction. “The magnitude of tragedy experienced by the people in Derna and surrounding areas is unspeakable,” Gagnon commented, expressing hope in the unity, solidarity, and support shown by Libyans from all over the country.
A Global Call to Action
The United Nations agencies, standing with the affected, have appealed for a fund of US$71.4 million to address the immediate needs of 250,000 affected people over the next three months. This is a call to global citizens, to extend a helping hand and be a part of this humanitarian mission, to bring relief to those suffering and to help reconstruct a region torn by nature’s fury.
